A US official told Reuters that the American military has carried out new strikes against Iranian positions, targeting what Washington described as a military site threatening US forces and commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, also said US forces intercepted and shot down several Iranian drones.
No further details were provided regarding the timing of the operation or the extent of possible damage.
At the same time, Axios quoted a senior US official as saying that Iran had launched four suicide drones toward an American commercial vessel, but US forces intercepted the drones and destroyed another launch platform before it could fire.
Earlier, Iranian media reported explosions and the activation of air defense systems around Bandar Abbas.
According to those reports, several explosions were heard in eastern Bandar Abbas around 1:30 a.m. local time.
Meanwhile, the Kuwaiti military announced that its air defense systems intercepted and neutralized several “hostile” missile and drone attacks.
Media outlets had earlier reported explosions and warning sirens in parts of Kuwait.
The latest developments come after fresh US strikes against Iranian-linked positions and a retaliatory response by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The IRGC had earlier claimed responsibility for targeting what it described as a US airbase used in attacks connected to the Bandar Abbas region.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard also warned that any further American attacks would receive a “more decisive” response.
The escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington have increased fears of a wider conflict in the Persian Gulf and potential threats to regional security and global energy routes.
