U.S. President Donald Trump has said that Washington’s goal is not to bring Tehran to the negotiating table after Tuesday night’s U.S. strikes on targets in southern Iran.
In a message posted on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said that contrary to some reports, he is not trying to pressure Iran into signing a new agreement.
He wrote: “It does not matter to me whether they sign a deal that, in their view, is worthless. I prefer the current situation — one in which we have almost complete control of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s economy is completely collapsing.”
The U.S. president also claimed that Iran is only delaying what he described as an “inevitable” process.
Trump then asked the Iranian people when they would take action to change the current situation.
The remarks came after the United States announced that it had carried out strikes against targets in southern Iran. The move has drawn a response from Iranian officials, who have described it as a violation of their sovereignty.
