A 22-year-old German student has died following a knife attack near Trier University in the western German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, according to German media reports. Police have arrested an Afghan asylum seeker in connection with the case.
The attack occurred on Wednesday on Robert Schuman Allee, just a few hundred meters from the university campus. Witnesses alerted emergency services after reporting that a man armed with a knife had attacked the victim before fleeing the scene.
Police later arrested the suspect, who has been identified as an Afghan asylum seeker living in the city of Trier.
Emergency responders rushed the student to hospital in an effort to save his life, but he later died from his injuries.
German media report that a specialized homicide investigation unit is examining the circumstances of the attack, the possible motive and the weapon used. Police have not yet released information regarding the motive.
Trier University expressed its condolences in a public statement, saying the tragedy had deeply affected the university community.
The youth wing of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Trier also condemned the attack and called for stronger measures to combat violent crime.
Authorities have not announced whether the suspect has been formally charged, and the investigation remains ongoing.
