Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported Thursday evening that naval facilities in the southeastern city of Konarak were targeted in two separate attacks described as being carried out by an “enemy.”
Mohammad Younes Haqqani, the governor of Konarak, told IRNA that security and emergency teams had been deployed to the area and that authorities were investigating the incident. He did not provide information about possible casualties or damage.
At the same time, Ehsan Jahanian, the political and security deputy governor of Bushehr Province, confirmed that a military site on the outskirts of Bushehr had come under what he described as an attack by the United States and Israel. He said no reports of casualties had been received and claimed Iranian air defenses had prevented U.S. drones from carrying out their mission.
The reports followed earlier claims by several Iranian media outlets that explosions had been heard in cities including Kerman, Bushehr, Asaluyeh and Bandar Abbas.
However, Iran’s state broadcaster denied reports of explosions in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, Sirik and Jask, saying no such incidents had been recorded in those locations.
Adding to the uncertainty, CNN quoted a U.S. official as saying the American military was not conducting any attacks at the time the reports emerged.
The conflicting statements from Iranian officials, state media and the U.S. government mean that the circumstances surrounding the reported incidents remain unclear. Independent verification of the reported attacks has not yet been possible.
