Taliban authorities in Kabul have confirmed that a driver struck a group of young women in the Afghan capital, injuring several of them in an incident that has drawn public attention after video footage circulated widely on social media.
Khalid Zadran, spokesperson for the Taliban police command in Kabul, said on Thursday that the individual responsible for the incident has been identified and that efforts to arrest him are ongoing.
According to Zadran, those injured in the incident were transported to hospital for treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
The incident took place on Sunday, 8 June, in Kabul’s Sixth Police District. According to information released by local sources, a white Toyota Land Cruiser collided with a group of young women who were walking along a roadside.
Sources familiar with the incident said the vehicle reportedly had tinted windows and was operating without visible license plates at the time of the collision.
The Taliban police spokesperson stated that three women were injured but did not provide details regarding their identities, ages, or the possible motive behind the incident.
The case has attracted increased attention because Taliban authorities only commented publicly on the incident several days after it occurred and after video footage of the collision spread online.
While officials now say the suspect has been identified, they have not explained why an arrest has not yet been made despite the passage of several days since the incident. Authorities have also not disclosed what specific measures are being taken to locate and detain the suspect.
The delay has prompted questions among observers about the progress of the investigation and whether additional information about the circumstances of the incident will be made public.
As authorities continue their search, the case remains under scrutiny, with many awaiting further details regarding the driver’s identity, the motive behind the collision, and the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
