Afghanistan’s Freedom Front says its fighters killed two Taliban members and wounded at least four others in an attack on a Taliban position in Nuristan province.
In a statement, the group said its fighters carried out the attack on a Taliban base in Doab district on Saturday night in what it described as a “guerrilla-style” operation.
The Freedom Front claimed that none of its fighters were killed or wounded and that its forces withdrew to their positions after the attack.
The Taliban have not commented on the claim, and there has been no independent confirmation of the reported casualties.
The reported attack comes as several armed opposition groups have claimed an increase in operations against Taliban positions in parts of Afghanistan in recent weeks.
According to assessments published in recent days, Taliban opponents carried out at least 15 attacks against Taliban positions across nine provinces during the week ending August 7. The Freedom Front, National Resistance Front and United Afghanistan Front have claimed that more than 30 Taliban members were killed in those operations.
Those casualty figures, however, have not been independently verified.
The latest claims point to continued armed activity by anti-Taliban groups despite repeated Taliban assertions that organized armed resistance has been significantly weakened across Afghanistan.
