The United Front of Afghanistan, led by former Afghan special forces commander Sami Sadat, has announced the start of military operations against the Taliban and what it described as “other terrorist groups.”
In a statement issued on Saturday, the group said the campaign forms part of its “Mission to Liberate Afghanistan” and aims to restore power to the Afghan people.
The organization said it considers itself the guardian of Afghanistan’s former constitution, the national tricolour flag and the country’s national values, adding that it will continue its activities in pursuit of public will, justice and opposition to Taliban rule.
The United Front also claimed that its fighters attacked Taliban forces on 30 July along the Kandahar–Spin Boldak highway. A video circulating on social media has been presented as showing the reported attack, but Nimruz TV cannot independently verify either the authenticity of the footage or the group’s claim.
As of publication, the Taliban had not publicly responded to the statement or the reported attack.
Sami Sadat was one of the senior commanders of the former Afghan National Army and served as the last commander of the 215 Maiwand Corps in Helmand Province before the collapse of the previous government in 2021.
The United Front of Afghanistan was established in the United States in October 2023. Until now, the organization had focused primarily on political activities rather than publicly announcing military operations.
The announcement comes amid a reported increase in armed activity by anti-Taliban groups across Afghanistan in recent weeks. The newly formed Homeland Soldiers Front previously claimed responsibility for an attack on Yaftal-e Payin district in Badakhshan, while the Afghanistan Freedom Front has also reported continuing clashes with Taliban forces in Zebak district.
