As political and security developments accelerate in Iran, the name of Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf is increasingly مطرح in discussions about the country’s future power structure.
Some reports suggest US President Donald Trump referred to contact with a “key figure” in Iran, with Israeli media identifying that figure as Ghalibaf, though the claim remains unverified.
Ghalibaf is a prominent figure who rose from military and security institutions into political leadership. He served during the Iran-Iraq war, later joined the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and became commander of its air force.
He went on to lead Iran’s police force and later served for over a decade as mayor of Tehran, a period marked by major urban projects as well as corruption allegations, including the “astronomical properties” case.
In recent years, he has served as speaker of parliament and is considered close to Iran’s core power structure.
Although he has run multiple times for president without success, he remains an influential political actor.
Observers say Ghalibaf represents a blend of security-focused and managerial approaches, combining a hardline stance toward the West with openness to negotiation as a political tool.
Amid rising pressure and regional tensions, some analysts view him as a key figure in Iran’s current power dynamics and a potential player in future developments.
