The European Union’s Mission to the United Nations in Geneva convened a high-level meeting with senior UN officials and representatives from several European and partner countries to review Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis and the situation of women’s rights.
The meeting brought together Dick Putzel, the European Union’s Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, along with representatives from Australia, Ireland, Austria, Germany, Spain, Denmark, Norway, France, Sweden and several other partner nations.
Also attending was Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), who joined discussions on the humanitarian situation facing Afghanistan.
In a statement posted on X, the EU Mission in Geneva reaffirmed that the European Union stands with the people of Afghanistan, supports the rights of Afghan women and girls, and remains committed to providing humanitarian assistance.
The statement stressed that Afghanistan continues to face one of the world’s largest and most complex humanitarian crises and requires sustained attention and support from the international community.
The meeting comes as humanitarian agencies continue to warn about growing needs across Afghanistan, including the challenges faced by returning refugees and internally vulnerable communities.
During a recent visit to Afghanistan, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi also emphasized the importance of ensuring returnees have access to essential services, employment opportunities and support for host communities, describing these issues as critical to addressing the country’s ongoing humanitarian crisis.
