Poland’s Border Guard announced on Monday that 45 migrants were detained for allegedly crossing illegally into the country from neighboring Lithuania.
According to Polish authorities, those detained included citizens of Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia.
Border officials also reported the arrest of a 52-year-old Ukrainian woman who is under investigation for alleged involvement in human smuggling activities.
Authorities claim the woman played a role in organizing the illegal transportation of migrants across the border and facilitating their movement toward Western Europe.
Polish officials stated that all detained migrants were returned to Lithuania in accordance with existing agreements between the two countries.
In recent years, the Lithuania-Poland border has become an important transit route for migrants and asylum seekers attempting to reach Western European destinations.
The route has attracted increasing attention from European authorities as migration pressures along the European Union’s eastern borders continue.
EU member states have responded to rising numbers of irregular border crossings by strengthening security measures, surveillance systems and border-control operations across the region.
In recent months, dozens of migrants, including Afghan nationals, have been detained along the borders of Poland, Lithuania and other Eastern European countries while attempting to continue their journeys westward.
Migration management and border security remain among the most politically sensitive issues facing the European Union, with governments balancing security concerns, asylum obligations and humanitarian responsibilities.
The latest arrests highlight the continuing challenges European authorities face in addressing irregular migration networks and cross-border smuggling operations along the EU’s eastern frontier.
