Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that Iran will not obtain nuclear weapons while he remains in office, reiterating one of Israel’s long-standing security priorities amid reports of progress in negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
In a message posted in Hebrew on the social media platform X, Netanyahu stated: “As long as I am Prime Minister of Israel, Iran will not obtain nuclear weapons.”
His remarks come as growing speculation surrounds a possible new agreement between the United States and Iran. Officials from both countries have recently indicated that negotiations have made significant progress, although no final agreement has been publicly announced.
At the same time, Axios reported that Netanyahu was surprised by the pace and direction of the emerging diplomatic process. According to the report, citing informed sources, Israeli officials were not fully briefed on recent developments in the negotiations and have sought additional information regarding the substance of the talks.
Two American sources quoted by Axios reportedly said that the US administration had not shared complete details of the ongoing discussions with Israel in recent days, contributing to concerns among Israeli policymakers.
The report further stated that Netanyahu has been consulting with key allies in Washington in an effort to gain a clearer understanding of the negotiations and any potential framework being considered.
Israel’s primary concern, according to the report, is that a future agreement may not sufficiently restrict Iran’s nuclear program or permanently block any pathway toward a potential nuclear weapons capability.
For years, Israeli leaders have consistently opposed agreements they believe leave Iran with significant nuclear infrastructure or enrichment capabilities. Preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon has remained one of the central pillars of Israeli national security policy across multiple governments.
Despite increasing reports about a possible breakthrough, neither the United States nor Iran has released the full details of any prospective agreement. As a result, major questions regarding enrichment limits, verification mechanisms, sanctions relief, and long-term restrictions remain unanswered.
Netanyahu’s latest statement underscores the continued sensitivity of the Iranian nuclear issue for Israel and highlights the potential diplomatic challenges that could emerge if Washington and Tehran move closer to a final agreement.
