U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) says an American service member was killed on July 18 during a controlled disposal operation involving unexploded ordnance from a downed drone in northern Iraq, which Washington identifies as an Iranian drone.
According to CENTCOM, another U.S. service member sustained minor injuries in the incident and remains under medical care.
The command also announced that, following an extensive search, U.S. forces recovered unidentified human remains on Sunday at the site of the July 17 attack on a military base in Jordan.
Medical examinations and forensic testing are currently underway to determine the identity of the remains. U.S. officials have not confirmed whether they belong to the American service member previously reported missing after the attack.
Earlier, CENTCOM said two U.S. service members were killed and another went missing during an attack that Washington attributes to Iran. The latest discovery may provide further information, but no official identification has yet been announced.
CENTCOM said it will withhold additional details, including the identities of those killed and the missing service member, until the notification process for their families has been completed.
Iran has not issued an official response to CENTCOM’s latest statement or to the U.S. allegations regarding the incidents.
