Russian President Vladimir Putin has called on countries opposed to Moscow to avoid military confrontation and resolve disputes through dialogue, arguing that negotiations remain the best path to reducing international tensions.
Speaking on Friday, Putin delivered a direct message to Russia’s adversaries, saying: “I can give only one piece of advice to Russia’s enemies: do not fight Russia.”
The Russian president said his country supports the peaceful settlement of disputes and favors diplomatic efforts over military escalation. However, he stressed that negotiations must be conducted on the basis of mutual respect and recognition of the interests of all parties involved.
“Let us live in peace and resolve all issues through negotiations,” Putin said. “But those negotiations must be negotiations, not ultimatums.”
His remarks come at a time when relations between Russia and Western countries remain deeply strained over the war in Ukraine and broader security disputes across Europe.
Since the start of the conflict, Moscow has repeatedly accused Western governments of applying political, economic and military pressure on Russia. Russian officials argue that Western policies have contributed to instability and prolonged confrontation.
Western governments and NATO members, meanwhile, maintain that Russia bears responsibility for continuing the war in Ukraine and undermining European security. They have continued to provide political, economic and military support to Kyiv while imposing sanctions on Moscow.
Putin’s latest comments were made as diplomatic efforts to manage international crises and reduce tensions continue on several fronts. Although communication channels between Russia and Western powers remain open, major disagreements persist over Ukraine, European security arrangements and the future of relations between Moscow and NATO.
Despite ongoing diplomatic contacts, prospects for a comprehensive improvement in Russia-West relations remain uncertain. Both sides continue to hold sharply different positions on a range of geopolitical and security issues.
The statement highlights the continued importance of diplomacy in international affairs, even as political divisions and military tensions between Russia and the West remain among the most significant challenges facing global security today.
