Taliban police officials in Samangan province say at least three people died in Khulm district while cleaning a sewage well.
According to Hashmatullah Rahmani, spokesperson for the Taliban police command in Samangan, the victims were overcome by toxic gas inside the well and later died after being transferred to a hospital.
The incident reportedly occurred on Friday evening, 18 Sawr.
Local sources said the victims were pulled from the well with the help of local residents and taken to a medical facility, but died due to severe gas exposure and the lack of adequate emergency medical resources.
Following the incident, Taliban police authorities urged residents to observe safety precautions while cleaning sewage wells and other confined spaces.
Deaths caused by toxic gas exposure in sewage systems and enclosed environments continue to occur periodically in Afghanistan, often linked to the absence of safety equipment, limited rescue capacity, and low public awareness regarding hazardous gases.
The tragedy highlights broader concerns over occupational safety and emergency preparedness in many parts of the country, where dangerous manual labor is frequently carried out without protective gear or professional rescue systems.
