U.S. Vice President JD Vance has defended President Donald Trump’s approach toward Iran, arguing that military action should only be taken when it serves a clearly defined strategic objective.
Speaking during a television interview, Vance criticized those calling for additional military strikes against Iran, saying they advocate bombing without explaining what they hope to achieve.
“Their view is simply to bomb, and then bomb again,” Vance said. “But they cannot really explain what the ultimate objective of those actions would be.”
He added that President Trump remains prepared to authorize military strikes if necessary, but only when such action directly supports a specific policy goal.
Vance also commented on ongoing contacts between Washington and Tehran, saying he finds Iran’s public messaging contradictory.
“One of the things I find both interesting and frustrating about the Iranians is that they say there are no peace talks taking place, while at the same time technical negotiations over a peace agreement continue between Washington and Tehran,” he said.
The vice president described this as either a negotiating tactic or what he called an “Iranian strategy,” adding that he finds the approach difficult to understand.
His remarks come as technical discussions between U.S. and Iranian representatives continue following recent diplomatic efforts aimed at implementing a broader agreement between the two countries.
