More than 1,000 Afghan refugees, including former Afghan partners of U.S. forces and family members of American service members, remain in a camp in Qatar awaiting resettlement in another country, according to NPR.
The report says the Afghans were placed in relocation and resettlement processes following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. However, years later, the final destination of some of them remains unresolved.
The U.S. State Department said discussions are continuing to find a solution and arrange resettlement for the refugees in another country.
The continued presence of the Afghans at the Al-Sailiya camp in Qatar, years after the end of the U.S. evacuation from Afghanistan, highlights the unresolved challenges surrounding the relocation of Afghans who were evacuated because of their cooperation with U.S. forces or their family ties to American military personnel.
For those still waiting, the resettlement process remains uncertain, despite the fact that their cases originated from the U.S. withdrawal and evacuation effort nearly five years ago.
