Former Afghan High Council for National Reconciliation Chairman Abdullah Abdullah has marked the 107th anniversary of Afghanistan’s independence by highlighting the sacrifices made by Afghans in the pursuit of freedom, justice and equality.
In a message posted on Facebook, Abdullah said Independence Day provides an opportunity to remember the efforts and sacrifices of generations of Afghans who struggled to achieve freedom and justice.
He also stressed the importance of unity, solidarity and national cohesion, calling on Afghans to preserve their sense of togetherness.
Abdullah described freedom and justice as enduring values and said commemorating Independence Day should serve as an opportunity to reflect once again on the efforts of the Afghan people to achieve those principles.
The 107th anniversary is being marked as Afghanistan continues to face significant political and social challenges.
Afghanistan secured its independence from Britain in 1919, during the reign of King Amanullah Khan. August 19, corresponding to 28 Asad in the Afghan calendar, is commemorated as Afghanistan’s Independence Day.
For many Afghans, the anniversary remains both a celebration of national sovereignty and a reminder of the sacrifices made throughout the country’s modern history in pursuit of political independence, freedom and self-determination.
