U.S. President Donald Trump has accused the Islamic Republic of Iran of carrying out a drone attack on a commercial cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, describing the incident as a violation of the recently agreed ceasefire.
In a post on Truth Social on Friday, Trump claimed that Iran launched at least four one-way attack drones at commercial ships transiting the strategic waterway.
According to the U.S. president, one of the drones struck the upper deck of a cargo vessel, causing damage but allowing the ship to continue its voyage.
Trump further claimed that U.S. forces intercepted and destroyed the three remaining drones before they reached their targets.
He described the incident as a “foolish violation of the ceasefire agreement” and directly blamed the Islamic Republic for the attack.
Several U.S. officials had earlier told media outlets that they believed Iran was responsible for the strike on the commercial vessel. However, Iranian authorities have not issued an official response to the allegations.
The claims come amid continuing concerns over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important shipping lanes for global energy exports and international trade.
The circumstances surrounding the reported attack remain under close scrutiny, and no independent verification of the allegations has yet been released.
