Private broadcaster Tamadon TV has announced that its transmissions have been suspended following a raid by Taliban forces on the network’s headquarters in Kabul.
In a statement published on its official Facebook page on Tuesday, the television station said its broadcasts were interrupted after Taliban personnel entered the main office of the media outlet.
Earlier in the day, at approximately 12:20 p.m. local time, Tamadon TV reported that Taliban forces had raided its central headquarters in the Afghan capital.
The network has not released further details regarding the reason for the operation or the status of its employees.
In its statement, Tamadon TV emphasized that the incident occurred as Afghanistan marks the religious observances of Tasu’a and Ashura, significant dates for many Muslim communities.
The broadcaster also called on Afghan citizens, particularly its viewers and those observing the Muharram commemorations, to closely follow developments related to the incident.
As of publication, Taliban authorities have not issued an official statement explaining the raid or the suspension of the channel’s broadcasts.
Tamadon TV is one of Afghanistan’s well-known private media organizations and has for years aired news, cultural and religious programming for audiences across the country.
The incident is likely to intensify concerns about media freedom and the operating environment for independent broadcasters in Afghanistan. Since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, local and international media watchdogs have repeatedly raised concerns about restrictions, pressure and challenges facing journalists and media organizations.
From Nimruz TV’s perspective, the suspension of broadcasts by a major private television network represents a significant development in Afghanistan’s media landscape. The lack of official clarification regarding the operation is likely to fuel further questions about press freedom, media independence and the future of private broadcasting in the country.
