US Representative Randy Fine says the Taliban should “never, under any circumstances” be recognized by any country.
Speaking at a session in Congress, he accused the Taliban of suppressing women and restricting freedoms, and called on Afghans to resist the group.
Fine also said the Taliban are imposing their ideology on the population.
His remarks come as some countries have set conditions for recognizing the Taliban, including respect for human rights, especially women’s rights, forming an inclusive government and cutting ties with terrorist groups.
He described the likelihood of meeting these conditions as low, saying the Taliban show no willingness to change their policies.
At the same session, members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee supported a bill aimed at reviewing the situation of women in Afghanistan and Taliban policies in this regard.
