Rabia Nasimi, an Afghan-British candidate representing the UK Labour Party, has won a local council seat in West London.
Nasimi ran in the East Acton constituency and secured victory with 1,207 votes during local council elections held across the United Kingdom on Thursday.
She migrated to the UK with her family in 1999 during the first period of Taliban rule in Afghanistan and later settled in London.
Rabia Nasimi is known as a human rights and migration activist and holds a doctoral degree from the University of Cambridge.
Her victory comes as the Labour Party maintained strong performance in London, although the party faced setbacks in some other regions of the country.
Beyond a local political result, Nasimi’s election is being viewed by many as a broader symbol of the growing participation of Afghan migrants in the political and social life of Western countries.
For parts of the Afghan diaspora, her success reflects a journey from war, displacement, and marginalization toward civic participation and political representation.
