A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck parts of Tajikistan and Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province on Monday, causing tremors across sections of the wider region.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at approximately 11:16 a.m. local time and was centered about 26 kilometers southwest of Khorugh, Tajikistan.
Residents in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province reported clearly feeling the quake, with some describing the tremors as relatively strong.
Reports also indicate that the earthquake was felt in several other Afghan provinces.
No official reports of casualties or material damage had been released at the time of reporting.
The event highlights the seismic vulnerability of the broader Central and South Asian mountainous corridor, where cross-border earthquakes frequently affect multiple countries simultaneously.
