Mali’s Defense Minister Sadio Camara has reportedly been killed during coordinated insurgent attacks that began on Saturday, marking a significant blow to the country’s military-led government.
Reuters reported that Camara was targeted at his home near Bamako, the capital.
Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-linked group, is reported to have led the broader offensive, with indications that Tuareg rebels were also involved.
The attacks reportedly struck multiple towns and military installations, while conflicting reports suggest that the northern city of Kidal may once again have fallen to insurgent forces.
Camara’s death removes a key figure within Mali’s military leadership at a time of deepening insecurity.
In response, Mali’s government has declared two days of national mourning, while the United Nations has condemned the attacks.
The developments may have significant implications for political stability, counterinsurgency strategy, and regional security in the Sahel.
