Taliban authorities in Helmand say four women died Friday after drowning in the Helmand River in the Aynak area of Nawah district.
According to local officials, the victims were traveling with a male family member and had reportedly stopped near the river for a short rest during their journey.
The incident reportedly began when strong currents swept away an elderly woman. Other female relatives then entered the water in an attempt to save her, but they too were overtaken by the current and drowned.
No further official details have yet been released regarding the identities of the victims or whether immediate rescue assistance was available.
The tragedy once again highlights the deadly risks posed by rivers and waterways in many parts of Afghanistan, where limited public safety awareness, weak protective infrastructure, and restricted emergency response capacity can rapidly turn ordinary situations into fatal disasters.
The incident underscores that for many Afghans, threats are not limited to conflict alone, but also include preventable natural hazards intensified by structural safety weaknesses.
