UNICEF’s regional director for South Asia, Sanjay Wijesekera, has called for schools in Afghanistan to be reopened for girls.
In a post on X, he said the start of a new academic year should bring hope to every child.
Wijesekera stressed that girls in Afghanistan have waited long enough to return to school and that the time has come to reopen classrooms.
He added: “It is time to reopen school doors — because hope, dignity and the future begin with education.”
