Qatar’s Minister of State for International Cooperation, Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad, has called for a shift from meeting Afghanistan’s immediate humanitarian needs towards supporting economic recovery and developing the country’s private sector.
Al Misnad said on Tuesday in a post on X that she raised the issue at a meeting of the Afghanistan Special Coordination Group in Doha.
She said building a more stable future for Afghanistan would require support for economic recovery and stronger private sector activity. She also emphasized expanding international cooperation and coordinating efforts to promote long-term stability and create conditions for sustainable economic recovery.
Her remarks highlight the relationship between emergency humanitarian assistance and longer-term economic development. While humanitarian aid remains essential for people facing immediate hardship, economic recovery also depends on creating opportunities for businesses, supporting private sector activity and improving the conditions for sustainable livelihoods.
However, the statement did not outline specific funding commitments, economic programmes or measures to be implemented following the meeting.
The challenge for international partners is to address urgent humanitarian needs while also supporting economic opportunities that can endure beyond short-term assistance. Al Misnad’s comments underline the importance Qatar places on coordinated international efforts, although the practical impact will depend on the policies, resources and initiatives that follow.
