The Afghan United Front says its forces carried out three operations against the Taliban in the southern provinces of Helmand and Kandahar over a 24-hour period, claiming casualties among Taliban personnel.
In a statement issued Friday, August 14, the group said one of the attacks targeted the Taliban police headquarters in the first security district of Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province.
According to the group, two Taliban police personnel were killed and two others were wounded in the attack.
The Afghan United Front also claimed that its forces carried out another operation in the Bolan area of Lashkar Gah’s seventh security district, targeting two Taliban members.
In a separate targeted operation in Daman district of Kandahar province, the group said one Taliban member was targeted.
The Afghan United Front claimed that those targeted had been involved in the detention, torture and killing of members of Afghanistan’s former security and defense forces.
Local Taliban authorities in Helmand and Kandahar have not commented on the claims, and there has been no independent confirmation of the reported casualties.
The claims come as several armed opposition groups have reported an increase in attacks against Taliban positions in different parts of Afghanistan in recent months.
However, the scale of these operations and the number of casualties remain difficult to independently verify, largely because of limited access to areas where the attacks are taking place.
If confirmed, the three reported operations within 24 hours would indicate continued activity by armed opposition groups in southern Afghanistan. But the available evidence is not sufficient to determine whether the attacks represent a broader escalation or a series of isolated operations.
