Local sources have told Afghanistan International that a Taliban border post commander was killed during clashes with anti-Taliban fighters in Afghanistan’s northeastern Badakhshan Province.
According to the sources, the fighting began on Thursday evening in the Topkhana area of Zebak district, near the border with Pakistan. They said opposition fighters launched an attack on Taliban positions, during which Faridullah Wahdat, the commander of one of the Taliban’s border posts, was reportedly killed.
Afghanistan International said it had received an image that it identified as showing Wahdat’s body. However, the Taliban have not commented on the reported fighting or the alleged death of the commander, and the claims have not been independently verified.
Local sources also said the latest confrontation differs from previous isolated skirmishes, with fighting reportedly taking place simultaneously across several fronts. They added that exchanges of fire were continuing at the time of reporting and that Taliban forces had sustained additional casualties, although no independent confirmation or casualty figures are available.
The identity of the group responsible for the reported attack has not been confirmed. However, local sources said anti-Taliban fighters remain positioned in the mountainous areas of Zebak district, while both sides have reportedly sent reinforcements to the front lines.
As of publication, Taliban authorities had not issued an official statement regarding the reported clashes or the alleged casualties.
The reported incident comes amid intermittent armed confrontations in parts of northeastern Afghanistan, where anti-Taliban groups have periodically claimed attacks on Taliban positions. Independent verification of battlefield developments in the region remains difficult because of limited access and conflicting accounts.
