U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says the deaths of two American service members in an attack that Washington attributes to Iran have strengthened the United States’ resolve.
Sharing a statement from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) on X, Hegseth wrote: “Rest easy, heroes. Their sacrifice only strengthens our resolve.”
Earlier, CENTCOM announced that two U.S. service members were killed on July 17 while defending American and allied forces in Jordan against what it described as Iranian-linked ballistic missile and drone attacks.
According to the statement, one U.S. service member remains missing, while four others were treated at hospitals in Jordan and later released. Several additional personnel who sustained minor injuries were medically evaluated and returned to duty.
CENTCOM said the identities of the two service members and further details about the incident would not be released until at least 24 hours after their families had been notified.
Iran has not officially responded to CENTCOM’s statement or to the U.S. allegation linking Tehran to the attack.
The incident marks another escalation in regional tensions as the United States and Iran exchange accusations over military operations across the Middle East.
