The United Nations has condemned racist remarks made by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla against France captain Kylian Mbappé, describing the comments as “shameful” and warning that racism has become a widespread problem in football rather than an isolated incident.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the UN Human Rights Office said reports of racist incidents during the 2026 FIFA World Cup demonstrate that discrimination remains one of the sport’s most serious challenges.
According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), Amarilla referred to Mbappé after France’s Round of 16 victory over Paraguay as “a colonized Cameroonian pretending to be French” and made additional insulting personal remarks. She also claimed the French forward had been “shaking with fear” during the match.
The UN stressed that public officials and political leaders have a particular responsibility to combat racism, discrimination and hate speech, warning that their words should never contribute to spreading prejudice.
The remarks have triggered widespread international condemnation. Paraguay’s Foreign Ministry, FIFA President Gianni Infantino and French President Emmanuel Macron all denounced the senator’s comments.
Mbappé also responded, saying Celeste Amarilla was “unworthy of her position.”
The controversy has once again placed the fight against racism at the center of global football, increasing pressure on football authorities and political leaders to respond more decisively to discriminatory behavior both on and off the pitch.
