FIFA declined requests from the football federations of Iran and Egypt to remove Pride-related branding and symbols ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup match in Seattle, according to a report by The Athletic citing informed sources.
The report states that both federations sought the removal of Pride-related signage and promotional material from areas surrounding the match and FIFA-related venues in the city.
According to The Athletic, FIFA rejected the requests, while the tournament organizing committee, local authorities and Seattle organizers insisted on proceeding with previously approved event plans.
The report also says the Football Federation of Iran requested that no ceremonies or promotional activities in support of the LGBTQ+ community be held during the July 6 match between Iran and Egypt, and that the display of related symbols inside the stadium be restricted.
In a statement quoted by the report, the Iranian Football Federation, without directly naming the LGBTQ+ community, said that “no ceremony or promotional activity related to this movement should take place inside the stadium or as part of the match environment.”
FIFA has not publicly commented on the reported requests or the details outlined in The Athletic’s report.
The issue comes amid ongoing discussions over how international sporting events balance cultural, political and social differences while maintaining FIFA’s tournament policies and commitments to inclusion.
As of now, the information is based on reporting by The Athletic, and FIFA has not officially confirmed or denied the account.
