Taliban authorities say security forces have seized a cache of weapons and ammunition in eastern Afghanistan while arresting 27 people in separate anti-narcotics operations in Kabul and Herat.
According to the Taliban Ministry of Interior, security personnel in Dand Patan district of Paktia province carried out an intelligence-led operation in the Nari area, where they discovered and confiscated multiple firearms and large quantities of ammunition.
The ministry said the seized items included eight Kalashnikov rifles, eight Kalashnikov magazines, twelve pistols, approximately 3,000 rounds of pistol ammunition, twenty Kalashnikov firing pins, and three M4 rifles.
Taliban officials claimed the weapons shipment had been smuggled into Afghanistan from Pakistan. According to the ministry, individuals involved in transporting the weapons fled before security forces arrived at the scene. Authorities said efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the suspects.
In a separate development, the ministry announced the arrest of 27 individuals on allegations related to drug trafficking and narcotics distribution.
Anti-narcotics units reportedly detained 19 suspects in Kabul and eight others in Herat during a series of separate operations targeting drug-related activities.
The ministry said those arrested will be referred to judicial and legal institutions after preliminary investigations are completed.
Taliban authorities also reported the seizure of nearly four kilograms of hashish, more than 1,700 narcotic pills, and quantities of opium, methamphetamine, heroin, and alcoholic beverages from the suspects.
Since returning to power in 2021, Taliban officials have repeatedly announced operations against drug trafficking networks and illegal arms smuggling. However, international organizations continue to identify Afghanistan as a significant transit route for narcotics trafficking across the region.
NIMRUZ ANGLE
The simultaneous announcement of an arms seizure near the Pakistan border and multiple narcotics arrests highlights the interconnected security challenges facing Afghanistan. Weapons trafficking, organized crime, and drug smuggling remain persistent concerns despite ongoing enforcement campaigns and stricter security measures introduced by the Taliban administration.
FINAL ANALYSIS
The latest operations underscore the continued importance of border security and anti-narcotics efforts in Afghanistan. While the Taliban portray the seizures and arrests as evidence of effective law enforcement, the scale of the confiscated weapons and narcotics suggests that trafficking networks remain active. The long-term impact of such operations will depend on whether authorities can disrupt the broader criminal structures behind weapons smuggling and the regional drug trade rather than only intercept individual shipments and suspects.
