Unidentified Drones Reportedly Increase Patrols Over Kabul

افزایش گشت‌زنی پهپادهای ناشناس در آسمان کابل

Unidentified drones are reportedly making more frequent flights over Kabul and other parts of Afghanistan, raising security concerns while their ownership and purpose remain unclear.

Sources in Kabul say residents have seen drones flying over parts of the capital and several other provinces. Sources close to the Taliban have also confirmed that the drones have been patrolling Kabul’s skies.

However, no reliable information has so far established which country or group operates the drones or why they are flying over Afghanistan.

The reported increase in drone activity comes at the same time as the release of a video showing a man identified as Hamza bin Laden, the son of former al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. In the video, the man wears traditional Afghan clothing and a turban, while a mud-brick wall can be seen in the background.

The location where the video was recorded has not been established. Its images alone cannot independently confirm that it was filmed in Afghanistan. There is also no independent evidence linking the video’s release to the reported increase in drone flights. For now, the two developments are only temporally coincidental.

The drone sightings nevertheless add to existing security concerns surrounding Afghanistan, particularly because any potential activity by al-Qaeda remains a sensitive issue for regional and Western governments.

The unidentified flights could have a range of explanations, including surveillance or other security-related activity, but there is currently insufficient evidence to determine their operator or mission. Attributing them to a particular country or armed group without further evidence would therefore be premature.

From Nimruz’s perspective, the most important element is not the speculation over who may be operating the drones, but the absence of clear information about their presence over Afghanistan’s capital. Repeated unidentified flights can themselves become a security concern when authorities are unable or unwilling to publicly explain their origin, purpose or operational status.

The reported appearance of a video attributed to Hamza bin Laden adds another layer to the security debate, but it should not be treated as evidence that the drones are connected to al-Qaeda. Establishing such a connection would require independent evidence about both the authenticity and location of the video and the identity and mission of the aircraft.

For now, the confirmed element of the reports is limited: unidentified drones have been increasingly observed in parts of Afghanistan, including Kabul, and sources close to the Taliban acknowledge the flights. Their operator, purpose and any possible connection to wider militant activity remain unresolved.
