Qatar has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining an active role in international engagement on Afghanistan at the 63rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
Abdullah bin Ali Behzad, Second Secretary of Qatar’s Permanent Mission in Geneva, said on Monday, September 7, that his country is working through mediation and hosting meetings related to Afghanistan to strengthen coordination and build consensus among international stakeholders.
He described the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan as concerning and said nearly 22 million people in the country need humanitarian assistance. According to him, insecurity, economic difficulties, climate change, displacement and declining international aid have increased pressure on the Afghan population.
The Qatari representative also warned that more than 4.7 million people, including around 3.7 million children, are facing severe levels of food insecurity.
Behzad said the education of Afghan children and girls is among Qatar’s priorities, adding that the Qatar Fund for Development and Education Above All Foundation have supported the education of 30,000 out-of-school students in Afghanistan since 2023.
He added that the Qatar Red Crescent has also been involved in providing education in remote areas of Afghanistan since 2016.
The Qatari representative further said that Qatar Charity, with financial support from the Qatar Fund for Development, is pursuing a project to construct and equip a specialized hospital for women and children in Afghanistan.
In recent years, Qatar has remained an active player in diplomatic efforts concerning Afghanistan by hosting meetings related to the country, including the Doha Process.
