Afghan journalist and photographer Mohammad Alam Kabiri has died in Iran after a months-long battle with cancer.
His death was confirmed by his brother, Rafi Kabiri, who announced the news in a message published on his Facebook page.
According to people close to the family, Kabiri had been receiving treatment for cancer at a hospital in Iran for several months before succumbing to the illness.
Following the announcement of his death, a number of organizations supporting journalists described the loss as a significant and irreplaceable blow to Afghanistan’s media community and the cause of press freedom.
They expressed condolences to Kabiri’s family, friends and colleagues, paying tribute to his contributions to journalism and photography.
Mohammad Alam Kabiri’s death comes at a time when Afghanistan’s media sector continues to face significant challenges, with many journalists working under difficult conditions both inside the country and in exile.
