Tajikistan’s Emergency Situations Committee says the body of Amna Amanulloeva, the wife of former Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region leader Alisher Mirzanabat, has been found in Afghanistan after a two-week search.
According to the committee, Taliban border guards recovered her body from the Panj River on Friday inside Afghan territory before handing it over to Tajik border officials. Forensic authorities later confirmed her identity.
Tajik officials said search operations are continuing for Mirzanabat’s two-year-old daughter, Arifa, who remains missing.
The accident occurred when Alisher Mirzanabat, his wife, their young daughter, driver and assistant were traveling from Dushanbe to Khorugh. Their vehicle reportedly veered off the road in the Darvoz district and plunged into the Panj River.
Tajikistan’s Interior Ministry said the crash was caused by excessive speed and the driver losing control of the vehicle. Reports indicate the car struck border infrastructure and barbed wire before falling into the river.
Mirzanabat’s body was recovered on June 26, around 20 kilometers downstream from the crash site. The bodies of his driver and assistant had also been recovered and buried earlier.
Tajik authorities say rescue teams continue to search for the missing two-year-old girl.
