Iran Human Rights has reported that two prisoners, including an Afghan national, have been executed at Zabol Prison in southeastern Iran.
According to the organization, the Afghan prisoner was identified as Homayoun Noorzai, a 70-year-old man from Kunduz Province. The group said he had been arrested about one year and seven months ago at the Milak border crossing on charges of drug trafficking and was later sentenced to death by Iran’s Revolutionary Court.
The report states that another prisoner, Hussein Yousafzai, a Baluch inmate, was also executed after spending 27 years in prison on drug-related convictions.
Iran Human Rights said Iranian authorities and state media have not officially announced or confirmed the executions.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly expressed concern over what they describe as an increase in the execution of Afghan nationals in Iran since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan.
The organization also warned of a sharp rise in executions related to drug offences. According to its data, at least 795 people were executed on drug-related charges in Iran during 2025, representing a 57 percent increase compared with the previous year.
The report has renewed calls from human rights advocates for greater transparency in Iran’s judicial process and increased international attention to the use of the death penalty.
