Russia’s Defense Ministry says Ukrainian forces violated a temporary ceasefire thousands of times during the Victory Day truce announced by Moscow.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the ceasefire began at 00:00 on 8 May under an order from President Vladimir Putin and was declared to mark the anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany during World War II.
Russian officials claimed that Russian forces remained in their positions and adhered to the terms of the ceasefire throughout the period.
The ministry alleged that Ukrainian forces used drones and artillery systems to target Russian military positions as well as civilian sites.
According to Moscow’s figures, Ukrainian forces carried out 1,173 attacks involving artillery, multiple-launch rocket systems, mortars, and tanks, in addition to 7,151 drone-related attacks.
Russia said the total number of ceasefire violations reached 8,970 incidents.
Ukraine has not yet officially responded to these claims.
Since the start of the war in 2022, the conflict has repeatedly seen temporary ceasefires accompanied by mutual accusations of violations, reflecting the deep mistrust between the two sides and the difficulty of achieving a sustainable halt to hostilities.
The latest accusations also highlight how ceasefires in the Russia-Ukraine war often become part of a broader information and political battle, with each side seeking to shape international perceptions of responsibility and legitimacy.
