Union Berlin has appointed Marie-Louise Eta as interim head coach following the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart, marking a historic moment in German football.
At 34, Eta becomes the first woman to lead a men’s team in Bundesliga history, breaking a significant barrier in European professional football.
The decision comes after a 3–1 defeat against Heidenheim, which saw Union Berlin drop to 11th place and increased pressure on the coaching staff.
Eta, who previously coached the club’s U-19 team and served as an assistant coach in 2023, said the team’s position remains unstable and emphasized the need for unity to secure results.
Her first major test will come in the upcoming match against Wolfsburg, where expectations will be high.
Angle Analysis:
While the appointment is historic, it is also performance-driven—placing Eta at the intersection of symbolic progress and immediate competitive pressure.
