Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says the United States has asked Kyiv to consider ceding the Donbas region to Russia in exchange for security guarantees and a potential peace deal.
In an interview with Reuters, Zelensky said Washington’s focus on Middle East developments has increased pressure on Ukraine to end the war quickly.
He stressed that any peace agreement must include strong security guarantees, warning that giving up Donbas could threaten the security of both Ukraine and Europe.
Zelensky said two key issues remain unclear: funding for military support and how allies would respond to any future Russian attack.
Russia has repeatedly insisted on full control of Donbas as one of its core war objectives.
Zelensky also expressed gratitude for continued US military support, including Patriot systems, and said Ukraine has made progress in strengthening its defensive and offensive capabilities.
