SCO Monitoring Afghanistan Closely, Says Secretary-GeneralRegional Security Concerns Keep Country in Focus

سازمان همکاری شانگهای: وضعیت افغانستان تحت نظارت دقیق قرار دارد؛تأکید بر پیگیری تحولات منطقه‌ای

The Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Nurlan Yermekbayev, has stated that Afghanistan remains under close observation by member states due to its impact on regional stability.

In an interview with a Russian media outlet, Yermekbayev said member countries continue to monitor developments in Afghanistan, recognizing that the situation affects the broader region, particularly for states sharing borders with the country.

He noted that although the SCO-Afghanistan Contact Group was previously active and played a significant role, its activities have been suspended since the Taliban returned to power.

Despite this suspension, Afghanistan continues to remain a key focus within the organization.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously expressed support for reactivating the contact group, suggesting it could contribute to stabilizing the situation in Afghanistan.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister has also called for the revival of the mechanism, reflecting growing regional concern.

Yermekbayev added that tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban are also being closely followed, although no formal requests have been made to the SCO for intervention.

He emphasized that the organization supports resolving disputes through political and diplomatic means.

Angle Analysis:
The continued monitoring of Afghanistan despite suspended mechanisms highlights a strategic uncertainty—where regional powers remain concerned but lack an active, unified framework to manage the evolving situation.
