European Council President Antonio Costa has warned against the escalation of conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, saying attacks on civilian infrastructure are illegal.
In a post on X on Monday, Costa said targeting civilian infrastructure, particularly energy facilities, is “illegal and unacceptable.”
He stressed that this principle applies to all conflicts, including Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Costa warned that civilians in Iran would be among the first to suffer if military operations expand.
He also said he had discussed the situation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, urging Iran to immediately stop attacks on regional countries and ensure full freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Costa added that escalating tensions will not lead to peace, pointing to ongoing regional efforts aimed at achieving a ceasefire.
