According to the Taliban Supreme Court, a man and a woman in Kabul have been sentenced to 39 lashes each and at least one year in prison on charges of “extramarital relations and running away from home.”
At the same time, Taliban authorities in Balkh also flogged a person 39 times for allegedly selling alcohol.
Public flogging remains one of the punishments enforced by the Taliban, which they say is based on Islamic law, but it has drawn widespread international criticism.
Reports indicate that since 2024, more than 2,000 people, including 291 women, have been flogged in public across Afghanistan.
The punishments continue despite ongoing criticism from human rights groups.
